Kedves Barátaink! 

A legutóbbi, 2018. júniusi közleményünk (https://bit.ly/2M4FfVe) óta, amely még táplált bizonyos illúziókat a Magyar Tudományos Akadémiával (MTA), illetve annak könyvtárával (KIK) folytatott tárgyalásokat illetően, a Lukács Archívum helyzete mit sem javult: zárva van, a kéziratok és könyvek nincsenek már ott, a lakás ígért felújítása meg sem kezdődött, és minden jel szerint meg sem fog (lásd később). Sőt a helyzet annyiban még romlott is, hogy azóta a fenntartó (a Lukács-hagyaték tulajdonosa), az MTA is a kormány támadásainak kereszttüzébe került: a korábban viszonylagos autonómiát élvező intézeteinek egész sorát fenyegeti a felszámolás. Ezzel teljesen bizonytalanná vált, mikor folytatódhatnak – folytathatók-e egyáltalán – érdemi tárgyalások a LAK ügyében.

Bár ma már senki sem gondolhatja, hogy a LAK megszüntetése segít kivédeni az Akadémia elleni politikai támadásokat, az MTA-tól egyhamar nem várható, hogy lépéseket tesz az Archívum ügyének elfogadható rendezése érdekében. Ugyan az MTA Könyvtár és Információs Központnak (a hagyaték kezelőjének) a főigazgatója ez év februárjában megbeszélésre hívta a LANA képviselőit, ahol ígéretet tett a LAK újranyitására, mi több, kilátásba helyezte az archívumnak mint tudományos műhelynek legalábbis valamilyen szintű felújítását és technikai modernizálását – a megbeszélésről emlékeztető (https://bit.ly/2JByLLz) is készült  –, de pár héttel ezelőtt hivatalos levélben értesítette az alapítványt, hogy az MTA elnöke nem járul hozzá a lakás felújításához. A LANA kuratóriumi elnöke ezt tudomásul véve kérte a főigazgatót, értesítse, „mikorra várható, hogy az újranyitás feltételei teljesülnek”, és röviden felidézte a februári megbeszélésen elhangzottakat. A KIK főigazgatója ezt illetéktelen beavatkozásként értelmezte olyasmibe, amit a Könyvtár magánügyének tekint, és azzal a rendreutasítással zárta válaszlevelét, hogy a LANA „nyugodtan várhatja a fejleményeket. Amint elakadunk a munkával, és Önökre lesz szükségünk, jelentkezni fogunk”.            

Mint érzékelhető, Lukács Archívum szénája rosszul áll: bár továbbra sem akarjuk megszakítani a kapcsolatot a Lukács-hagyaték tulajdonosával, konstatálnunk kell, hogy a tárgyalások megint megfeneklettek. A LANA természetesen ennek ellenére sem mond le eredeti céljáról, de nem várunk tovább: a kialakult körülmények között csak még fontosabb feladatunknak tekintjük eredeti Lukács-szövegek, Lukácsról szóló írások megjelentetésének támogatását, egy kutatói közösség megteremtését (kiadási, illetve kutatási terveinket ld. https://bit.ly/2Eu2IJf).  

Az archívumot, de most már egyáltalában a kutatás szabadságát – magát az MTA-t is – fenyegető politikai támadások miatt a hagyományos intézményi háttér nélkül kell megpróbálkoznunk a Lukácsot érintő kutatások ösztönzésével és támogatásával. Épp ezért azzal a kéréssel fordulunk a LANA barátaihoz, azokhoz a szervezetekhez és magánszemélyekhez, amelyek és akik a szolidaritás mellett korábban kifejezték szándékukat, hogy anyagilag is támogatnák a munkánkat, járuljanak hozzá az alapítvány működéséhez és terveink megvalósításához. Dear Friends, 

Since the release of our last statement (https://bit.ly/2M6lcWg) – in which we expressed our hope in the success of negotiations with the representatives of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) and its Library and Information Centre (LIC) – the situation of the Lukács Archives (LAK) has not changed: it remains closed, The Lukács manuscripts and personal library are not there, and the promised renovation of the philosopher’s flat has not even begun and probably will not even start (see below). Moreover, the situation has been worsened by the attack of the Hungarian government on the HAS, possessor of the Lukács heritage. Therefore it has become entirely uncertain whether meaningful negotiations about the future of the LAK will continue or not. 

Even though nowadays no one would seriously consider that the closure of the LAK would help to defend the HAS, it is not likely that the HAS will make any further step towards an acceptable resolution of disputes concerning the LAK. In February, the Director General of the LIC (as dispenser of the heritage), István Monok, invited representatives of the Lukács Archive International Foundation (LAIF) to a meeting – during which he promised the reopening of the LAK; moreover, proposed its renovation and technical modernisation as a scientific workshop. Despite this, a few weeks ago he informed the LAIF that the President of the HAS would not allow this renovation. The President of the LAIF acknowledged this and asked the Director General to inform her about the conditions in which the reopening would be possible on the basis of February’s negotiations. The Director General interpreted the inquiry as an undue intervention into what he considers the internal affairs of LIC and ended his reply with the following words: “You should calmly wait for developments. If we get stuck with the work – and if we need your help – we will inform you”. 

The case does seem disastrous for LAK: though we do not intend to break ties with the possessor of the Lukács heritage, we have to admit that negotiations led to a dead end. Naturally, LAIF does not give up its primary goals, but we cannot wait any longer: in this situation we are considering finding support for the publication of the Lukács texts and writings on his philosophy and organising a community of researchers as our most important tasks (please find our publication and research plans here: https://bit.ly/2YHiCaT). 

Because of the threatening attacks on the LAK and on academic freedom – and even on the HAS – we have to work on urging and supporting the research of Lukács without the traditional institutional background. Therefore we would like to kindly ask the friends of LAIF, those organisations and people – who besides expressing their solidarity, are intending to support our work financially – to contribute towards the expenses of LAIF and to the realisation of our plans. Liebe Freunde, seit unserer letzten Mitteilung (vom 17. Juni 2018; https://bit.ly/2ErXspy), die hinsichtlich der Verhandlungen mit der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (UAW) noch gewisse Illusionen hegte, hat sich die Situation des Lukács Archivs nicht verbessert: Es ist geschlossen, die Manuskripte und Lukács‘ Bücher sind nicht mehr im Archiv, die versprochene Renovierung der Wohnung hat noch nicht begonnen – selbst das Versprechen, sie soll renoviert werden, scheint nicht mehr zu gelten (s. unten). Die Lage hat sich eher noch verschlechtert, da selbst der Träger des Archivs und Eigentümer des Lukács Nachlasses, die UAW ins Visier der Angriffe der Regierung geraten ist: Einer ganzen Reihe ihrer zuvor relativ autonomen Institute droht die Liquidation. Deswegen ist vollkommen unsicher geworden, wann wieder – ob überhaupt – sinnvolle Verhandlungen über das Archiv geführt werden können. 

Auch wenn heute niemand mehr daran glaubt, dass die Schließung des Archivs die Angriffe auf die Akademie beenden könnte, kann von der UAW nicht erwartet werden, dass sie auch für uns akzeptable Schritte zur Klärung der Situation des Archivs einleiten wird. Allerdings hat der Generaldirektor der Bibliothek der UAW, der in Sachen Georg-Lukács-Archiv ersichtlich Vollmacht hat, im Februar d. J. Vertreter unserer Stiftung zu einer Besprechung eingeladen, wo er die Wiedereröffnung des Archivs, und zwar als wissenschaftlicher Werkstatt versprach, und sogar eine Art Renovierung und technische Modernisierung von Lukács‘ Wohnung in Aussicht stellte – doch vor einigen Wochen benachrichtigte er brieflich die Stiftung darüber, dass die Führung der UAW der mehrfach angekündigten Renovierung ihre Einwilligung entzog. Die Vorsitzende der Stiftung nahm diese Entscheidung zur Kenntnis, und bat den Generaldirektor, sie „zu informieren, wann es zu erwarten sei, dass die Bedingungen der Wiedereröffnung sich erfüllen“, und berief sich dabei auf die erwähnte Besprechung. Was seitens des Generaldirektors der Bibliothek der UAW als unbefugte Einmischung in etwas interpretiert wurde, was die Bibliothek als ihre private Angelegenheit betrachtet, und er schloss seinen Brief mit der Zurechtweisung, die Stiftung solle „in aller Ruhe die Begebenheiten abwarten. In dem Moment, wo wir mit der Arbeit ins Sticken geraten, und sie zur Hilfe benötigen, werden wir uns melden“. 

Spürbar sieht es für das Archiv trüb aus: Wir waren gezwungen (nicht das erste Mal) zu konstatieren, dass, auch wenn die Stiftung den Kontakt zur Akademie nicht abbrechen möchte/kann, die Verhandlungen trotz der Versprechen gescheitert sind. Selbstverständlich gibt die Stiftung ihr grundlegendes Ziel (die Wiedereröffnung des Georg-Lukács-Archivs in seiner ursprünglichen Form) nicht auf, doch wir wollen nicht weiter warten: unter diesen Umständen scheint es uns nur noch wichtiger zu sein, Lukacs-Texte und Schriften über Lukács zu veröffentlichen, Forschungsprojekte anzustoßen, eine Forschungsgemeinschaft zu etablieren. Angesichts der gegen das Georg-Lukács-Archiv, doch neuerdings unverblümt auch gegen die Freiheit der Forschung schlechthin gerichteten Angriffe – die nun auch die UAW selbst betreffen –, müssen wir ohne den traditionellen institutionellen Hintergrund den Versuch machen, Forschungen in Sachen Lukács zu inspirieren und fördern. Daher möchten wir uns mit der Bitte an die Freunde der Internationalen Stiftung Lukács-Archiv (ISLA) wenden, an die Organisationen und Privatpersonen, die neben ihrer Solidarität auch den Wunsch bekundet haben, unsere Arbeit finanziell zu unterstützen, zur Arbeit der Stiftung, zur Realisierung unserer Pläne beizutragen. Manuscripts to be removed from the Lukács Archive

On the instruction of the director general of the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA LIC), the removal and transfer of the manuscripts held at the Lukács Archive will begin on 15 January 2018. The manuscripts will be taken over by the Department of Manuscripts & Rare Books of the LIC, and the process will last a couple of weeks. The manuscripts will thus no longer be researchable at the Lukács Archive.

The will, the manuscripts were in the possession of the Academy's archives. We want to bring the archive where documents are digitized and then stored properly. The Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Institute of Philosophy of the property, what ensures the Institute. Statement on the formation of the Lukács Archive International Foundation (LAIF) (Hungarian: LANA)

In response to the institutional attack against the Lukács Archive and its international reputation, a new, international organization has been formed—the Lukács Archive International Foundation (LAIF)—to support the ongoing and renewed functioning of the Lukács Archive, to provide for the professional safekeeping and publication of Georg Lukács’s legacy, and to encourage co-operation between Hungarian and international scientific institutions and research centres engaged in Lukács scholarship. Founded by Ágnes Heller and János Weis, the LAIF seeks to promote research into Lukács’s life work and its historical context through the various means of academic organization (organizing international conferences and establishing grants and fellowships).  The Board of Trustees members so far invited by the founders are: János Kelemen, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (chair); Péter Szigeti DSc (vice-president); Ádám Takács PhD (secretary); Péter Agárdi CSc; Gábor Boros DSc; Gábor Gyáni, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; András Kardos; Zoltán Kenyeres DSc; Tamás Krausz DSc; Miklós Mesterházi CSc; Mária Székely; and Ferenc Tallár DSc. Under the patronage of Iván Szelényi, LAIF intends to create an international network of patrons, and appeals to Hungarian and international academic colleagues to support its aims via donations. The Board of Trustees will initiate negotiations shortly with the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and other partner institutions concerning opportunities for co-operation.
