COS Department exam entrance allowance

Computer Science department,

The 2016 strikes have taken a big toll on each and every student, lecturer and worker at the University of Pretoria.

As a lot of other faculties have allowed their students exam entrance, we would like to make a petition to receive exam allowance as well.

Furthermore, the majority of computer science modules do not offer summer school. Any students that do not pass may need to add an entire year to their degree in part due to circumstances that were out of our control. The amount of knowledge and understanding gained through lectures, class tests, and marking sessions (of practicals and assignments) should not be underestimated.

We do understand that we are currently studying for a variety of IT degrees that are held in high regard and that it is unreasonable to expect to have these handed to us on a silver platter.

We would therefore like to propose the following:

* Each student receives exam entrance for their respective CS module/s.

* The student must still get a 50% final mark to be allowed to pass the module. For example: If a student has a semester mark of 28% you must obtain a 72% for the exam to get a 50% pass.

OR

* The minimum mark required for exam entrance is dropped from 40% to 30%

A student is still responsible for paying their tuition regardless of their final mark.

We understand that the recent events have been very taxing on the EBIT faculty as a whole and would like to meet the lecturers, professors, and faculty halfway . Therefore we hope that they're willing to work with us in reaching a decision that benefits all parties involved.

Under the circumstances we have all endured during the semester, we must do our best to accomodate everyone.

Kind regards

The Computer Science students
