It should be the right of every human to have access to language.  How ridiculous to even think that oral language should be the only avenue.

#160 future for deaf children "important" sign language.

2010-09-22 22:50

I fully support the right to use any sign language as a part of an educational program! The use of sign language in every school for the deaf is of the importance for all deaf children.

#166 Sign Language is a MUST for the Deaf

2010-09-22 23:21

I cannot imagine learning without American Sign Langauge. Thank GOD for Ohio School for the Deaf during my time for its belief in TOTAL COMMUNICATION which meant ASL is included in all of learning.  Imagine if we learn by only speech, many of us would live in very very DARK...like Dark Age.  I knew of my classmate who was transferred from other school where she learned by only speech but she had no understanding  of what lesson was all about!!! That is very cruel. I beieve it is an abuse to her and her intelligence. Very shameful! She tried to catch up but it was rather too late. Very common to other students whom I have met.  Such a sad story I was told from each person.

I believe that the children use American Sign Language to express their opinions better and use English to communicate through written formats. They also performed better taking the state assessment tests by taking American Sign Language and English classes as it considers Bilingual approach.

Please consider American Sign Language as the natural language for Deaf children.

#169 Extremely important that sign language is used in educational programmes

2010-09-22 23:55

I think this is a majorly important issue. We all learn using language and sign language is simply another language! Human rights for ALL. Many thanks!

PAH, I witnessed the announcement at ICED in July, 2010 that ICED committee and BC Deaf Community agreed to REJECT 1880 Milan to ban sign language for the D/d children for their education.

#171 Linguistic Rights

2010-09-23 00:13

Legal protection of a deaf child's access to full visual language  (Sign Language) 24/7 is a basic and unchangeable human right.

I learned SO MUCH when I finally arrived to Gallaudet (my first full signing experience) - what a waste of time to pretend to be hearing - what a waste of my talents!

#174 Great experience in Spain. Sign Language into the educational programm

2010-09-23 00:56

They call it ABC Proyect and, as I know, there are 16 deaf pupils into a High School where teachers (responsibles of the different subjects) are competent signers. So they are sometimes inside the classroom with the rest of the hearing classmates or (deppending of the subject) outside, separated from the rest. In all cases the uses Spanish Sign Language.
