La 'Torre Del Tuerto' overlooked the 'muelle nuevo', somewhere near where the docks are nowadays and was probably a corruption of the word Puerto. 'La Torre del Diablo' (Devil Tower) as it was always called, stood until destroyed sometime in 1940.

For a new road or place fine, no issue. Just visited Durban South Africa; complete mayhem from the same foolish idea to re-name the City Centre. No one knows where they are or where they are going. A completely unecessary change unless there's a political desire perhaps to take 5 Cannon Lane off the map for ever?

Why change the name after 300 odd years. The desire of one man against a town who see no reason or will for change. A waste of time and money.

I believe this is an act of pure dictatorship. It needs to be stopped, or every time someone else dies and the so called group Gibraltar society together with the GOG thinks that the decised needs to remembered
would be the renaming of further roads / street to commemorate them. Then this wil be a joke. However if their are new roads / streets being build then this would be more than appropriate and the correct approach to a democratic society if this is what we are.

Let's not mess about causing problems when what we should be doing is honouring these two gents who contributed much to Gibraltar. Why not name a suite in the new catholic community centre which I believe is being built - as ioften saw Bishop Devlin having a tipple in the Cannin Bar (on Cannon Lane), it would be fitting.

I grew up in Gib and part of the real charm is the history and tradition of the place. It should be preserved as close to it has been for centuries as possible.

As far as I can gather so far the majority of Gibraltarians DO NOT want our street names changed. Can we have comments on who Want them changed? (not the ones who dont mind change) I think we can all agree that we can name new road, new premises after our Bishops that is not the issue here. Surely we ALL have a say in the matter?

A totally ludicrous idea which will end up costing residents of both roads in both time and money. Why should we have to change the deeds to our homes? The address on our utility bills? Unacceptable!

We have to preserve Gib's heritage. The Devil's Tower was demolished to make way for defences so let's at least keep the name Devil's Tower Road. Name new buildings/roads after individuals but leave the existing road names alone please.

Most of our street names have historical significance, they are quaint, quite unusual and peculiar to Gibraltar.Leave them be ,do not change them ...name new ones as you wish, but leave the old ones.

Well said all of you, the Rock is so historical names should NOT be changed..... and surely no one even wishes to see a statue of a Bishop !!!!   Spend the money on something better than that ....

Leave old street names as they are!! They are part of our culture and heritage and something that we should be all proud off!!

But renaming existing roads is an act of despotic vandalism.

It is important to maintain our historical links in our country as they form part of our identity as a people.

Although I am not a Gibraltar citizen, we spend quite a bit of time in Gibraltar as we have a boat in the marina. The names of the streets in Gibraltar obviously reflect the history of the city, and shouldn't be tampered with ... there is so much new development in Gibraltar, why can't some of these be given the new names instead? I can imagine the uproar there would be if old London street names were changed, or even the roads around where I live!

Perhaps name the access road to Devil's Tower Camp "Devil's Tower Road", but Cannon Lane should certainly not be changed

No street names should be changed any of the names that want to be implemented should be for a new street which has or will be open in the not to distant future

The names we give to our streets etc are part of our heritage, they are named after a specific reason and so should be kept. We do not want to loose our identity whether it be in personal or communal.
