SASL is the mother tongue of some people and without it they are denied their right to communicate. It is essential that South African society take their obligations as signatories of the U.N. declaration of the Rights of people with a disability seriously.

My daughter is deaf and sign language is a form of communication, equality means opportunities and recognition for all , we are a diverse nation , the deaf deserves to be recognized . It's a language just like English , Afrikaans and IsiZulu.

It is important for the South African deaf community to have their right to access to information through South African Sign Language and also for younger deaf children to have early acquisition in using their first language, which is South African Sign Language.

With Sign Language being made official, I am equal and so do all Deaf South Africans. I am tired of being called a Deaf and dumb man or being said that those who use sign language are stupid people........Our Deaf children cannot communicate with those hearing teachers and I have no access to government departments to ask for information in my own language....
