I think it is absolutely disgusting that tail docking is still allowed in this country. We are well behind the rest of the civilised world in this respect and I think government should hang their heads in shame allowing this brutality to be legal!

This kind of animal torture (seriously
that´s what tail docking is)has been illegal in Sweden senc 1989.
It´s time for Ireland to grow up and stop being a developing country then it comes to animal wellfair.

Disgraceful and appalling. The mutilation of dogs should be illegal, full stop.

Any politician who allows this through should be willing to have his own thumbs hacked off and tailbone broken, to see what they would be subjecting dogs to.

Please take this petition serious. Our poor pets have been found thrown out all over Ireland. It's not right how these animals are used and abused. Please help stop the cruelty today.

I'm horrified that this legislation totally ignores the welfare of puppies as young as 3 days old - all animals feel pain, they have nerve endings just like humans and to put a young puppy through this barbaric procedure for cosmetic reasons is beyond my comprehension. Who in the Irish Government decided they 'know better' and go against all advice from the Irish Veterinary Union?! This is savage mutilation of the worst kind and Irish politicians should be advocating for a complete ban - not promoting cutting body parts from puppies without anaesthesia!!

Do not inflict pain on defenseless animals ... there is NO valid excuse for it.

With a MSc in Animal Welfare, this clearly is detrimental to the welfare of puppies in Ireland. Back yard mutilations should be completely illegal as they cause great pain to puppies through the procedure itself and associated infections. There is no need in this day in age for tails to be docked. The risk of injury through non-docked tails is so low, there is no justification for such a procedure. Most dogs nowadays are pets, and therefore would not need such augmentation, originally designed for working animals. It is ethically unacceptable to alter an animal to fit its role (for working dogs) or for cosmetic reasons. Tail docking on all accounts should be unacceptable in our society.

The mutilation of any creature is an abhorrence. I urge the Government of Ireland remove this from the forthcoming bill. Mutilation to be permitted in an other wise caring and international respected country will be sham full, making the Irish people look barbaric.

Tail docking is not for the benefit of the animal. If you have this done our do this to your animal, don't ever call yourself an animal lover. Mutilisation causes pain and suffering to pets for no justifiable reason.

Its a disgusting cruel and completely unnecessary act that should never be performed let alone by people who have no access to any pain relief. Why the government think its a good idea to allow anyone to perform this act is beyond me. Clearly they have given this no thought whatsoever.
