Safer Commuting on Metrorail Trains

Dear Commuter

We as Commuters are facing different situations everyday of which some have serious repercussions for us as commuters.

Metrorail needs to take note of these issues that we are facing on a daily basis, therefore I have take the initiative and the lead in being the Voice of the Commuter to assist those who are unable to Voice their concerns to Metrorail. There are about 732 000 passenger journeys per day during the working week across all networks.

Introduction and Purpose of this Petition

I am part of the commuters-community using the service on a daily basis and lately, I just like any other commuter feel very unsafe on the trains and at stations e.g. Bellville as a result of the increase of crime, such as pick-pocketers, assaults, intimidation, theft of personal items on trains and at stations, even cases where people where throw-out of trains in some instances after being robbed.

Let’s work together in finding solutions to the current issues than having a disagreement we can make it work when we work together.

Issues needed urgent attention

The issues that needs attention at present is currently as follows:

  • No Security visible on perrons or on trains
  • No Access Control measurements to perrons
  • Conditions of Trains
  • Over-crowded trains
  • No ticket validations / Conductors
  • Metrorail Staff should stop harrassing commuters
  • Delays

Metrorail has commit themselves in there mission statement and references has been made several times that

"Tickets will be checked when entering and leaving the platforms at stations.  In addition, random inspections can occur on board the train by inspectors and fines are issued so make sure you have the right ticket."

We want to propose the following suggestions:

  • Create more employment opportunities for Security Officers to be deployed at the Stations.
  • Visibility of Police Officers on the trains as promised already in 2010 during the Soccer World Cup
  • Deployment of more Police Officers on the trains
  • Ticket Validations should be consistantly and non-ticketholders should be dealt with.
  • More trains on the network
  • Looking into other options to replace the copper cables that gets stolen on an daily basis.

We, the undersigned, hereby plead towards an better, commuter friendly environment without fearing of been robbed and also have an peace-of-mind journey with Metrorail.

Let's Stand together and make our Voice heard.
