ELIMINATION OF A PUTRID SMELL IN LONEHILL, BEVERLEY AND SURROUNDING AREAS

Piggery at Leeuwkop Prison

The three sludge dams used for processing the waste water from the piggery, have been modified from a system which was designed to use agitation as a means to provide aeration to the sludge, the system has been modified to a system that uses compressed air in order to facilitate aeration and to assist agitation as well as aerobic digestion of the waste solids.
The afore-mentioned system causes a serious health nuisance. The compressed air process was introduced at the end of last year which corresponds with time the complaints from the public started.
The Department of Correctional Services is dependent on the Department of Public Works for capital installations, which will obviously have cost implications. To abate the odor problem, it is recommended that the Gauteng Department of Public Works be approached to reinstate the original waste water processing system.

It is therefore recommended that the affected residents provide this department with a petition to the effect and in order to demonstrate the seriousness of the situation
