Wisconsin Geology Day Designation

Geology shaped Wisconsin’s spectacular scenery, which forms the basis of the tourism and recreation industry so important to the state’s economy. Wisconsin has a rich mining tradition, dating back to paleo-Indians, and its geological resources have been critical to its settlement and industrial development. Mining gave Wisconsin its nickname “The Badger State.” In order to celebrate the geological heritage and riches of the state and to provide educational outreach to the public, we are asking the Wisconsin State Legislature to designate the third Saturday in October as “Wisconsin Geology Day” to coincide with the last day of national Earth Science Week on an annual basis.
