It is cruel and unnecessary. It is simply causing pain for the sake of the animal looking the way we want them to. It serves no other purpose, whatsoever. The fact that vets can not/will not do it means that there will be many animals suffering due to ineffective/painful/slow/absurd methods done at home.

Well Barry according to Sunday's Newspapers, looks like the Government are planning to amend the Animal Welfare Legislation to allow unqualified people i.e. Dog Breeders to carry out this barbaric acts!

I think that this is a disgusting practice under proper, sterile and safe circumstances but to allow a supposedly "qualified" individual to perform such a procedure without any kind of pain relief is an absolute abomination and takes us back to the old days instead of moving forward to future and better conditions.

Animal welfare laws in this country are a disgrace.

These barbaric operations should not be carried out by anyone, never mind untrained people, under insanitary conditions. Many vets/veterinary staff that I have known over many years agree with me.

The mind boggles at this unnecessary & cruel treatment of puppies. I really can't believe a sane body of people would allow this to happen. So please sign this petition n fight for puppies rights to be free of such hideous pain for no gain.

A dog's tail is part of their body language and means of communication to others. There is no need to dock a dogs tail which is very sore and cruel for the dog so this practice should be stopped.

#19: Barry - Actual text of the Act

Barry,  I read this too.

http://www.dogstrust.ie/mediacentre/pr13dogstrusthailsthepassingoftheanimalhealthandwelfarebill2012.aspx

"In relation to dogs welfare, we are particularly pleased to see the strengthened laws on dog fighting and animal baiting, the prohibition on the tail docking of dogs and, of course, provisions to enable the micro-chipping of dogs."

So why are we being asked to sign a petition?

No dog needs its tail docked. 1 of my dogs (terrier) has it done she was like that when we bought her but so wish she had her tail.

Please ban this barbaric and unnecessary practice and let dogs keep their tails to wag. Docking is just cruel mutilation.

just for once can we proper well thought out legislation in this country instead of the usual ambiguity that allows people to undermine what the law was intended to protect?

Docking tails is just barbaric, even more so if untrained people are doing it. If vets aren't allowed to mutilate in this way, then why can members of the public do it. I've heard horrific stories of what happens when it goes wrong.

I thought that Tail Docking was already banned EU wide but perhaps Ireland is not a signature to that.
