All About Shock: Knowing the Different Types of Medical Shock

Shock is one of the most dangerous medical conditions. It is different from what people perceive as psychological shock wherein an individual is like stuck in the traumatic event that happened to him/her. Medical shock is worse since it can kill a person. According to records, 1 out of 5 individuals who experience shock eventually die. This life-threatening condition is a cause of insufficient circulation of blood in the body. Blood carries the oxygen and distributes it into the vital organs. Hence, a lack of blood flow will cause a failure of function among organ systems. This condition is deadlier for those who have an injury or severe disease.

Any person can have medical shock due to various reasons. Elders are prone to shock particularly those who have a cardiovascular ailment. For families with grandparents in this state, it is advisable to let them own medical alert systems in case a sudden attack of shock happens when the elder is alone.

Each person may have a different type of medical shock. The differences between shocks are based on the cause of its occurrence. For an additional guideline, here are the various types of shock.

Cardiogenic Shock

Cardiogenic or shock in the heart is a consequence of damages in the organ. The heart is responsible for distributing the blood all throughout the body. It is one of the vital organs which keeps other system work. A person with the cardiovascular disorder is more likely to have this type of shock. If the heart is unable to deliver enough blood it leads to organ failure and then shock - or as most people know as a heart attack.

Once encountered a person having an attack, immediately call for medical attention or if you know the basic shock treatment do so.

Hypovolemic Shock

It is a severe condition of blood or fluid loss. It usually happens if a person has a traumatic injury resulting from the inability of the heart to deliver enough blood. When the person lost to much blood, the heart will stop from pumping causing immediate dysfunction of vital organs. This type of shock is the common reason behind deaths in car accidents. Thus, once you see a person who happened to be in an accident, check first the patient injuries. If the injuries are small, apply first aid and if not, call for help.

Anaphylactic Shock

Some individuals are unfortunate to have hypersensitivity to certain foods or medicines. People with this condition experience allergic reactions once they get to eat a particular food which they have an allergy. A severe attack of allergic reaction is called anaphylactic shock. It is extremely dangerous if the victim suffers from difficulty in breathing.

Neurogenic Shock

The spinal cord is one of the important parts of the body that when fails to perform its function results to paralysis. An injury to the spinal cord can lead to neurogenic shock. This injury happens as a result of accidents.
