Subject: Urgent Facilities Concerns at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School

Dear President Motamedi and Vice President Alexander, We are writing to urgently address a series of critical facilities issues at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School. Despite repeated notifications, tickets, and Williams Complaints, these concerns remain unaddressed, jeopardizing the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Broken Drain Causing Sewer Backup: The broken drain in the children’s play area (East) at the entryway to the school has led to regular sewer backups. While the drain has been cleared multiple times, standing water remains immediately below the grate and the drain likely needs to be entirely replaced. The flooding and year-round standing water both pose a health hazard and require immediate attention. Multiple Williams Complaints have been filed and the situation remains unresolved.

Outdated and Unclean Restrooms: The only restroom facilities for students, available on the first floor, are outdated, poorly maintained, and often unclean. Students deserve access to hygienic and functional restrooms, and they are not receiving that access.

Deteriorating “Carpeted” Play Area: The “carpeted” play area within the east courtyard is deteriorating rapidly. The worn-out surface is surrounded by a tripping hazard, endangering our children during playtime, as well as students and visitors with poor eyesight. We believe it is not ADA compliant and poses a hazard to students and parents in wheelchairs or who need assistance walking.

Pigeon-Proofing Falling Off and Crumbling Exterior Windowsills: The pigeon-proofing installed on the side of the building is falling apart. The parts of the windowsills continue to fall into the yard. Falling pieces pose a risk to students and passersby.

Collapsing Back Wall of Campus Fence: The back wall of the campus fence is collapsing into the west play area and is a hazard. We’ve been told the SFUSD is still negotiating with neighbors for repairs but in the interim it poses a concrete safety hazard. Children deserve a safe area to play, free from hazards.

Inadequate Lighting on the Second and Third Floor and Deteriorating Paint: The second and third floor of the facility lack proper lighting, with bulbs frequently out or broken. Walls are dirty and paint is deteriorating throughout the building. This affects the learning environment and poses safety risks.

Cafeteria Roof Leak and Mushroom Growth: The cafeteria has a persistent leak from the roof, resulting in the growth of mushrooms on the walls. This unsanitary condition is unacceptable.

Broken Drinking Fountains: These are often out of order and despite receiving a grant and working with the SFUSD facilities department, we have not received a concrete timeline for installation.

Inoperable School Bell and PA System: Both the school bell and the PA system are inoperable. Phones installed in the classroom are also non-operable. This poses a safety risk in the event of an emergency.

We implore the SFUSD to take immediate action to rectify these issues. Our students deserve a healthy, clean, and safe learning environment. We request that you conduct a thorough inspection, allocate necessary resources, and prioritize the maintenance and repair of Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School.

The Flynn PTA has been actively raising funds to improve the facilities throughout the campus, but without the partnership of the SFUSD on these basic items, we can only get so far. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to hearing about the steps taken to address these pressing facilities complaints.

Desagüe roto que causa atascos en el alcantarillado: El desagüe roto en el área de juegos para niños (este) en la entrada de la escuela ha provocado atascos regulares en el alcantarillado. Si bien el desagüe se ha limpiado varias veces, el agua estancada permanece inmediatamente debajo de la rejilla y es probable que el desagüe deba reemplazarse por completo. Las inundaciones y el agua estancada durante todo el año representan un peligro para la salud y requieren atención inmediata. Se han presentado múltiples quejas de Williams y la situación sigue sin resolverse.

Baños anticuados y sucios: Las únicas instalaciones sanitarias para estudiantes, disponibles en el primer piso, están anticuadas, mal mantenidas y, a menudo, sucias. Los estudiantes merecen acceso a baños higiénicos y funcionales, y no están recibiendo ese acceso.

Deterioro del área de juegos "alfombrada": El área de juegos "alfombrada" dentro del patio este se está deteriorando rápidamente. La superficie desgastada está rodeada por un peligro de tropiezo, lo que pone en peligro a nuestros niños durante el tiempo de juego, así como a los estudiantes y visitantes con problemas de visión. Creemos que no cumple con la ADA y representa un peligro para los estudiantes y padres en sillas de ruedas o que necesitan ayuda para caminar.

Los alféizares exteriores a prueba de palomas se caen y se desmoronan: El blindaje a prueba de palomas instalado en el costado del edificio se está cayendo a pedazos. Las partes de los alféizares de las ventanas siguen cayendo en el patio. La caída de piezas representa un riesgo para los estudiantes y transeúntes.

Colapso de la pared trasera de la cerca del campus: La pared trasera de la cerca del campus se está derrumbando en el área de juego oeste y es un peligro. Nos han dicho que el SFUSD todavía está negociando con los vecinos para las reparaciones, pero mientras tanto representa un peligro concreto para la seguridad. Los niños merecen un área segura para jugar, libre de peligros.

Iluminación inadecuada en el segundo y tercer piso y pintura deteriorada: El segundo y tercer piso de la instalación carecen de iluminación adecuada, con bombillas frecuentemente apagadas o rotas. Las paredes están sucias y la pintura se está deteriorando en todo el edificio. Esto afecta al entorno de aprendizaje y plantea riesgos de seguridad.

Gotera en el techo de la cafetería y crecimiento de hongos: La cafetería tiene una fuga persistente en el techo, lo que resulta en el crecimiento de hongos en las paredes. Esta condición insalubre es inaceptable.

Bebederos rotos: A menudo están fuera de servicio y, a pesar de recibir una subvención y trabajar con el departamento de instalaciones del SFUSD, no hemos recibido un cronograma concreto para la instalación.

Timbre de la escuela y sistema de megafonía inoperables: Tanto el timbre de la escuela como el sistema de megafonía no funcionan. Los teléfonos instalados en el aula tampoco funcionan. Esto supone un riesgo para la seguridad en caso de emergencia.

Imploramos al SFUSD que tome medidas inmediatas para rectificar estos problemas. Nuestros estudiantes merecen un ambiente de aprendizaje saludable, limpio y seguro. Le solicitamos que realice una inspección exhaustiva, asigne los recursos necesarios y priorice el mantenimiento y la reparación de la Escuela Primaria Leonard R. Flynn.

La PTA de Flynn ha estado recaudando fondos activamente para mejorar las instalaciones en todo el campus, pero sin la colaboración del SFUSD en estos temas básicos, solo podemos llegar hasta cierto punto. Gracias por su atención a este asunto. Esperamos con interés conocer las medidas adoptadas para abordar estas quejas apremiantes sobre las instalaciones.
