There is no way the Coastguard should have given up on them so quickly. It is clear that the ingress of water would have been coming in via the flange on the keel, which somehow came away from the boat (clearly visible from the photos taken by the Maersk container ship), causing it to capsize. However, they gave plenty of warning to the coastguard of their taking water on board, so they also had time to prepare for their evacuation, in spite of the conditions prevailing as the time, it will have been possible for them to access the 12 man liferaft.
