Look at what happened in Yellowstone National Park when wolves were exterminated. Without wolves, the elk population bred out of control and caused more problems than the wolves ever did. Less healthy elk survived to pass on bad genes and spread disease among their herds which could then be transmitted to livestock as well. But worst of all, the elk overgrazed the land which negatively impacted the land itself and many other animal species were negatively impacted. And animals that scavenged off of wolf kills were also negatively affected without their presence. Once wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone it reset the balance of nature.
