Mullaperiyar Dam Issue - Signature Collection

Why is this important?

As the citizens of India, we express our deep concern for the issue of Mullaperiyar Dam, which has created panic among the people of south India.

The dam which was built in 1889 and designed initially for a period of 50 years, has started showing signs of deterioration as per the scientific studies conducted in the past few years. The situation has become a nightmare for about 50 Lakh people living in the downstream. Though the issue has been reported since 1979, political solutions to this issue have not yet arrived. Recent earthquakes, though minor in nature, can be seen as an indication of increased seismicity of the region surrounding Mullaperiyar dam that added to the concerns. These warning signals should be taken very seriously to prevent an impending disaster.

In the light of the above, we request your immediate attention and involvement in this issue. We are putting forth our support for the following causes mentioned below.

(1) Reducing the water level at Mullaperiyar dam to 120 feet with immediate effect
(2) Construct a new dam complying with international standards within a stipulated time
(3) An arrangement to provide uninterrupted water supply to the state of Tamil Nadu, during the course of construction of dam so that their requirements are met.

Hope the Honorable Supreme Court / your Excellency will take these matters into serious consideration and take immediate steps to arrange for a speedy solution.

All of you are requested to sign this petition and help in our effort to pressurize the authorities to bring a speedy solution to the Mullaperiyar dam issue. We will be providing a hardcopy of this petition with the collected signatures to the authorities.
