Wheelchair user Mieke Monsieur from Hasselt (pictured right)  came Saturday for a big disappointment during a visit to Kinepolis Hasselt. Until recently she could easily enter in her wheelchair all the halls of the cinema complex. But now she could not reach certain rooms.

That is because wheelchair users recently will not be allowed in a number of movie rooms The reason for the measure calls Kinepolis Group in the fire: “Wheelchair users can no cinemas wheelchair ramp is no longer accessible by elevator. If a fire occurs, the lift may not be used”.

“It is true that four of our fourteen cinemas in Hasselt inaccessible is to wheelchair users,” confirms Myriam Dassonville of the Kinepolis Group.

She tells that the new measure does not lead to wheelchair users some films from the offer would no longer be able to view. “The films are not assigned to a particular room. The programming changes regularly. On the website when they find out which films run in the halls and rooms or accessible to them.”

But it isn’t that easy for Mieke. “Because I am in a wheelchair, it is not so simple for me. I can not go where and when I want. I have to rely on friends or family.

Mieke Brouwers, general manager of the Hasselt VZW Access Office, says the measure falls short “It’s easy to say, the elevator must not be used to fire, so wheelchair users can no longer enter the room”. “That’s like saying you can only take the bus when no one is on the bus.”

according to Brouwers, organizations and Kinepolis Group in such situations to better organize “It is the organization to work out an evacuation procedure which also keeps in mind wheelchair,” she concludes.

On 29/04/2011 This article appeared in the newspaper: Kinepolis Hasselt refuses four cinemas for wheelchair users because we are not allowed to use the elevator anymore, until last year there was no problem about using the elevator made

One week after the article, apart from friends there wasn’t came much response, so now I make this petition. Want to support me? than sign this petition as support for all disabled who may also be refused places with the same excuse for fire safety.

09/06/2011 Kinepolis let the center of discrimination know that they consider they have done enough for wheelchair users and and they make no further changes for us.

I get news next week about what further steps I can take against the Cinema complex.

Thanks Mieke Monsieur
