My grandfather, who fought in Church Street, was a Captain in the 4th Battalion (Rathfarnham Coy) throughout the War of Independence and the last Commandant of the Battalion (pro-treaty) from March 1922. He founded the first Old Comrades Association in 1924, for the members of the pre-truce 4th Battalion, they had premises at 14 Thomas Street, Dublin, which were named Áras Ceannt.

The citizens of Galway and her visitors have a right to know about the incredible man and native son, after who the City's Bus/Train Station is named. Whether someone agrees with 1916 or not, Éamonn Ceannt was a great musician, a standard bearer in the Gaelic revival and a man who was prepared to lay down his life for his beliefs. How many of us would be prepared to do that now?
