This is fantastic news - maybe animal lovers could take the same approach for other animal welfare issues like proper sentencing and fines for animal cruelty, new laws around breeding dogs to get rid of puppy farms and many other awful practices that affect animals in Ireland. This is great news and it proves that petitions and pressure on the right government departments can change laws.

Great news!!!!! Well done to the organizers! Any hope for this happening across European Union? Portugal is exceptionally bad.

Brill news shows power of people. All we need now us more Welfare officers, more prosecutions and more donations to charity to assist these organisations looking after animals.

SO GLAD TO HEAR THE GOOD NEWS. I CANNOT ABIDE PEOPLE WHO ARE CRUEL TO ANIMALS OR USE THEM AS A MEANS FOR THEIR OWN GRATIFICATION.

It was my understanding that it was already the case that this was not permitted to be done by veterinary professionals. It is the breeders and pet owners that need t be stopped from mutilating animals.

Absolutely excellent, and thank you to the petition author for raising the issue, and to Minister Coveney for responding positively

My biggest congratulations to all involved and to the members of the public who like myself were caring enough to put their name to this very important and well set up petition. Thanks to Pete the vet for always getting on TV3 to alert people to the plight of animals in this Country and in fairness thanks too to Simon Coveney TD for doing the right thing !! Many Many congrats..Catherine
