With a MSc in Animal Welfare, this clearly is detrimental to the welfare of puppies in Ireland. Back yard mutilations should be completely illegal as they cause great pain to puppies through the procedure itself and associated infections. There is no need in this day in age for tails to be docked. The risk of injury through non-docked tails is so low, there is no justification for such a procedure. Most dogs nowadays are pets, and therefore would not need such augmentation, originally designed for working animals. It is ethically unacceptable to alter an animal to fit its role (for working dogs) or for cosmetic reasons. Tail docking on all accounts should be unacceptable in our society.
