#81: shakes head - people need breaks?

You also probably get to go to the bathroom when you want to, eat for more than 20 minutes a day, see other adults for more than 5 minutes, are paid based on your performance and dont' individually meet the needs of hundreds of children a day.......or maybe you do.

#106 August 1 Calendar for CCSD

2011-02-19 18:31

I never ceased to be amazed at why CCSD wants teachers, parents, etc. to participate in a survey, then the board votes the opposite. What's wrong? Don't you think we know what is good for us? Sounds more like a dictatorship than a democracy! Please rescend this vote and leave the balanced calendar!

According to the data we are seeing at CHS, discipline is down, grades are up and absenteeism is down. The Balanced Calendar is a win/win. According to your own pole, the majority of people in Cobb County support it. For the sake of the students, the Board needs to change it's vote.

I think not having as many breaks is not a good idea. It will make students not be able to focus on school work and possibly fail their classes. I think you should keep the calendar the way it is now. (the 2010-2011 school year.)

#110 Calendar Change

2011-02-19 18:46

When is the next CCSD Board Meeting? Perhaps those who oppose Board's decision for the new calendar should show up at the meeting along with local media and demand that the calendar be changed!

Remember, it wasn't too many years ago that the extended Thanksgiving Break was given to the community, then after a survey that showed overwhelming popularity, the Board changed the break back to 2 days. They just don't care to listen!

#101: Guest - Re: people need breaks?

I bet, unlike teachers, you also get paid vacations and holidays.  Teachers do not.  That time off in the summer?  Unpaid.  Christmas Day?  Unpaid.  Spring break?  Unpaid.  I use my breaks to plan for the next six weeks, complete professional learning and rejuvante.

Teachers work hard, are underpaid for the education they have earned and are underappreciated in our society.  Fine.  I can live with that.  But please take my professional opinion that the balanced calendar is working for our children.  They are achieving more academically and I can prove it with the data from my classroom.

#113 CCSD Board

2011-02-19 19:03

I'm disappointed in the board's decision to change the school calender after it was clear that it's not wanted by the people they SERVE. I'm not clear on why they thought this was a good idea. It doesn't make sense to have a entire week off in January and no time off before Christmas- it makes me wonder if there was some sort of personal agenda involved.

Your argument that "you got along just fine without breaks" is not utilizing the data that we have- since they changed the calander to what is it currently (2010-2011), grades are up and absenteeism is down.  The calander with breaks looks to improve the preformace of the students.

To the new board members: thanks for taking the publics vote into consideration. Whatever happened to majority rules and what was the purpose of voting if you weren't even interested in the outcome?!

#70: keep august 15th!!!!! - The "Majority" cheated?

Does it not bother you that they raised this issue inspite of so many other more important issues? - budget, superintendent?

Does it not bother you that they disregarded the majority?

There a lot of good ideas that have been implemented since we were in school in the 70s and 80s.  Do you think we should go back to having lead in our paint, too?  It's called progress.

#121 survey

2011-02-19 19:46

What was the point of the survey if they had already made up their minds? As a parent and former teacher, I loved the fact that we had these week long breaks to help avoid that feeling of being burned out. I think everyone comes back feeling fresh and ready to learn.
